Progress Update: Žnjan Plateau Beach Development

Five months after work started on developing Split's largest beach, the outlines of its future look is clearly visible. Today, Split's mayor, Ivica Puljak, visited the construction site with his colleagues to ensure the work was progressing at the expected pace.

"This is not just one in a series of projects, this is a step forward into the future of modern Split - the Flower of the Mediterranean"

Five months into the development of Split’s largest beach, the future of the Žnjan Plateau is taking shape. The outlines of this transformative project are now clearly visible. Currently, concrete works are in full swing. The most challenging aspect involves constructing the garage, where significant progress has been made—much of the foundation and floor slab have already been poured. In some areas, work has also begun on concreting the walls, columns, and ceiling slabs.

Mayor Ivica Puljak Visits Žnjan Plateau Construction Site Today, the Mayor of Split, Ivica Puljak, visited the Žnjan Plateau construction site with his colleagues to ensure that the project is progressing as planned.

“The conditions are extremely challenging, so I wanted to personally thank all the workers who, despite the intense heat, are doing their best to keep the city’s largest project on track. Although I regularly receive updates, it’s truly inspiring to see something significant emerging from dust—the most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. I know that our citizens are closely following every step of the construction, and we’re now seeing the concrete outlines of the new Žnjan, something we’ve been waiting for over 26 years. The residents of this area have adapted to the demands of this large-scale project, and I’m confident that by next summer, when we gather here, we’ll be able to say—this was worth it!” said Mayor Puljak.

The Mayor also confirmed that the City will financially support the project until the ITU tender is announced and realized. “Given the slight delay, likely due to the involvement of multiple cities, we have proposed to the City Council the approval of a loan of up to EUR 15 million for Žnjan Company, to bridge this period,” the mayor added, emphasizing that the implementation of strategic projects, including Žnjan—one of the largest and most important in the past 45 years—is in the general interest of Split and the entire region.

“This project goes beyond merely addressing infrastructure—it includes new parking spaces, a recreation area, beach landscaping, and the introduction of cultural facilities. This isn’t just another project; it’s a step into the future of a modern Split, the jewel of the Mediterranean,” said Mayor Puljak.

Alongside ongoing work on the garage, the final solid structure has been removed from the site. Concrete work is advancing, with floor slabs being poured and wall reinforcements installed at several locations across the plateau. The amphitheater foundation is also taking shape, with concreting efforts well underway. Meanwhile, at the diving board location, preparations are being made for the installation of the reinforced concrete segment, which will be executed using the pull-on technique. In addition, groundwork for the promenade is progressing, with the edge beam installed and the pathway towards the beach taking form.

“Currently, there are hundreds of workers, dozens of trucks and machines, and six cranes operating on the construction site, making every day extremely dynamic. Now that we’ve ‘gotten out of the ground’—completing the earthworks and soil strengthening, which was particularly delicate—and begun concreting, the progress is visible almost daily. We’ve also introduced an additional shift to maintain our pace despite the high temperatures,” said Zoran Jakelić, head of works for Žnjan d.o.o. “We understand that citizens are missing access to the beach, but we urge everyone to respect the ban on entering the construction site. Trespassing at this stage is akin to entering someone’s private home. Beyond the potential fines, it’s crucial to emphasize that the site is extremely dangerous. We ask everyone to follow the rules to prevent any potential accidents.”
